Day 2: Arrive in Cairo, Egypt
Monday, March 10, 2025
Settle into your luxurious accommodations with time to refresh and unwind—the remainder of the afternoon and evening are at leisure.
Cairo itself is bustling with vibrant energy, as locals move about their daily lives. The city is an intriguing mix of modern skyscrapers juxtaposed with ancient mosques and bustling bazaars.
Overnight: Marriott Mena House
Day 3: Cairo | Giza
Tuesday, March 11, 2025
Awake to extraordinary views of pyramids and palm trees situated against Cairo’s expansive horizon.
Following breakfast view the iconic Great Pyramid—the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World—and the Great Sphinx, impressively carved from a single mass of limestone atop the Giza Plateau. These monumental structures embody enigmatic technological and architectural sophistication of an ancient era. Standing before these marvels for the first time is awe-inspiring.
Step over to the Grand Egyptian Museum, a newly opened complex described as the largest archaeological museum in the world and host to more than 100,000 artifacts. Peruse the extensive exhibits of royal tombs, portraits, and pre-historic relics, and view King Tut’s entire treasure collection.
Overnight: Marriott Mena House (B,L,D)
Day 4: Cairo
Wednesday, March 12, 2025
After breakfast visit the Egyptian village of Sakkara, home to one of the world’s oldest step pyramids—dating back over 4,600 years. Walking through the vast Sakkara necropolis, you’ll encounter rows of mastabas (burial tombs), each telling the story of individuals from Egypt’s distant past. Hieroglyphs and reliefs adorn the walls, illustrating the deep spiritual significance this place held for the ancient Egyptians.
Ascend to the top of Mokattam Hill to reach the Citadel of Cairo for a relaxing lunch overlooking the city. Then visit some of Cairo’s ancient Coptic churches to learn more about this minority ethnoreligious group.
Stroll through Khan El-Khalili, one of the largest bazaars in the Middle East. Founded in the 14th century, this lively open-air market (or souk) is a labyrinth of vendors selling colorful fresh spices, traditional foods and fabrics, and baubles and trinkets.
Overnight: Marriott Mena House (B,L)
Day 5: Cairo | Flight to Luxor
Thursday, March 13, 2025
After a boxed breakfast. check out of the hotel and transfer to Cairo International Airport for the group flight to Luxor.
Luxor exudes an air of reverence, as two historical sites of worship reside within its boundaries. Guided touring brings you into the grandeur of each.
Over 2,000 years old, the sprawling Karnak Temple Complex was a principal religious center in the New Kingdom. Spanning 200 acres across the city’s east bank, the site features massive statues, towering obelisks, intricate hieroglyphics, and the Avenue of Sphinxes.
Tonight explore the magnificent Luxor Temple and enjoy its illuminated beauty. Located in the center of the city, the impressive temple was buried for centuries before its full excavation was completed in 1960.
Dinner this evening is at leisure. Choose from various dining options at the hotel, including two on-site restaurants or a unique barbecue experience in the gardens, featuring a buffet and traditional meat kebabs served at your table.
Overnight: Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor (B,L)
Day 6: Luxor | Esna – Embarkation | Nile River
Friday, March 14, 2025
Following breakfast venture to the hallowed grounds of the Valley of the Kings, an ancient burial site of many influential Egyptian pharaohs and other prominent figures. The structural intricacy and ingenious architecture involved in designing the elaborately decorated tombs is astonishing. The multi-room, and often multi-level, chambers are adorned with carvings, inscriptions, and artwork. It’s no surprise archeologists continue to make new discoveries at this UNESCO World Heritage Site after nearly two centuries of excavations.
Admire the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, a multi-story structure built to honor one of the few female pharaohs of the New Kingdom. This grand temple, framed by massive limestone cliffs, is notable for its precise architectural features.
A short drive to Esna brings you to your sailing vessel and home-away-from-home on the Nile River for the following four days and nights.
During embarkation, settle into your stateroom and get acquainted with the welcoming common areas on your private dahabiya—a traditional Egyptian sailing boat, featuring wooden decks, billowing sails, and comfortable furnishings. Gather for a delicious lunch, and take advantage of leisure time to lounge on the sun deck as you watch the serene landscape pass by. The gentle lapping of the Nile’s waters against the boat creates a soothing soundtrack for your journey.
As night falls the air on the dahabiya takes on a magical quality. The clear Egyptian skies are a canvas for countless stars, and the river is peaceful. Relax on deck, stargazing and recounting highlights of the week’s adventures.
Overnight: Dahabiya (B,L,D)
Day 7: Edfu | Nile
Saturday, March 15, 2025
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before joining your Egyptologist for a guided tour to El Kab—a less often visited site—where the air is sedate and contemplative. El Kab is one of upper Egypt’s oldest settlements, now a famous necropolis with ancient tombs of nobles and army generals. It’s a place where you can connect with the quieter, more introspective side of Egypt’s history. The rock-cut chapels and cliffside inscriptions tell stories of a civilization that was deeply rooted in spiritual beliefs.
Continue to Edfu for a guided tour of the Ptolemaic Temple of Horus—the most complete and best-preserved temple in Egypt. Horus, the principal god of resurrection, is depicted in his role as avenger of his father, Osiris, who was murdered by his brother, Seth. Although construction of this temple was finished only a few decades before the rise of Antony and Cleopatra, its design reflects traditional pharaonic architecture.
The remainder of the day is at leisure to rejuvenate aboard the dahabiya. The elegantly appointed, modern staterooms are a tranquil oasis after full days of exploration. Feel a soft breeze waft through the open windows, bringing in the scent of the river and the surrounding greenery. You’ll find yourself sinking into plush bedding, savoring the restful ambiance.
This evening dine on a lavish buffet of Egyptian specialties presented alongside a performance featuring local music and dancing.
Overnight: Dahabiya (B,L,D)
Day 8: Edfu | Nile | Kom Ombo
Sunday, March 16, 2025
Sailing up the river, visit Gebel el-Silsila, an ancient quarry where pharaohs excavated sandstone and limestone blocks to build their temples and monuments. As you explore, notice the chisel marks left behind by artisans who toiled here thousands of years ago. This area also contains numerous tombs dating back to the 18th Dynasty.
Return to the dahabiya to unwind during an afternoon of sailing. Join a discussion with one of the Egyptologists, kick back on a plush lounger with a refreshing drink, or simply gaze at the ever-changing scenery passing by. The sense of serenity is unmatched as you sail at a leisurely pace, allowing you to fully admire and appreciate the beauty of the Nile.
This evening gather with the group for a special barbecue dinner on a nearby island.
Overnight: Dahabiya (B,L,D)
Day 9: Kom Ombo | Nile
Monday, March 17, 2025
Today set out for the fascinating temple of Kom Ombo, a rare double temple dedicated to two ancient gods: Sobek, the crocodile-headed deity, and Horus, the falcon-headed god. Inside, well-preserved reliefs and hieroglyphs cover the walls. Captive crocodiles were once kept within the temple, and mummified crocodiles can be seen in the sanctuary today. The temple’s location on the banks of the Nile adds to its allure, creating a sense of connection between the sacred structure and the life-giving waters of the river.
Return to the dahabiya for a final night of sailing, and partake in a special gala dinner on board.
Overnight: Dahabiya (B,L,D)
Day 10: Nile – Disembarkation | Aswan
Tuesday, March 18, 2025
Disembark after breakfast and travel to the Aswan High Dam for a look at contemporary Egyptian construction on a monumental scale. The dam sits 364-feet high with a volume of 57,940,000 cubic yards. The annual flooding of the Nile can now be controlled as the dam collects floodwaters, which can be released manually to maximize benefits for farmland, river flowage, and electric power.
Today there are no crocodiles north of the Aswan High Dam, but in ancient times, a robust population lived in the Nile’s waters. Ancient Egyptians believed that by worshipping Sobek they were protecting themselves from these predators.
Take a motorboat ride to the island of Agilkia, site of the temples of Philae. The most famous temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis, was constructed in the 6th century BCE. The site also features the last known inscription written in Egyptian hieroglyphs, dated to 394 CE.
Enjoy time at the hotel to refresh before setting out for Aswan’s famous market, Sharia as-Souq. Discover endless displays of aromatic flowers and spices, hand-crafted perfumes, colorful carpets, and other Egyptian and African goods.
Overnight: Sofitel Legend Cataract (B,L)
Day 11: Aswan
Wednesday, March 19, 2025
After breakfast at the hotel, visit Elephantine Island to explore its UNESCO World Heritage archaeological sites. Today, it is the only ongoing excavation site open to tourists.
The remainder of today is at leisure. Take advantage of the luxurious amenities at the hotel, including the outdoor infinity pool overlooking the Nile River and al fresco dining at The Terrace with inspiring views of Temple of Khnum and Elephantine Island.
Overnight: Sofitel Legend Cataract (B,D)

Alumni, Friends, Family | All are welcome!
“In summer of 2022, I joined the HSU Traveling Range Riders for Cruising the Danube and the Oberammergau Passion Play. It was such a delightful experience in every way that I went in 2023 with HSU to Ireland and am cruising the Mediterranean in 2024. To share HSU connections while making wonderful memories is something not to be missed.” Sherry Barsch ’64
“We have been on two Traveling Range Rider trips… we are impressed with the quality of accommodations and activities… there are always so many scheduled activities and sights to see as well as plenty of time to explore on your own. Guides are always knowledgeable and helpful. It is so fun traveling with old friends and making new ones along the way!!” -Teresa Bunch Garrett ’82 & Tony Garrett ’82
“Traveling to the Netherlands was my first trip with inspiring HSU alumni which became a very positive one. I did get to know great alumni I had not met or with whom I had not even attended classes at our university. I wouldn’t hesitate to go on a future trip. I do hope to select another one soon.” -Ernestine Meyer ’64
“Really enjoyed the new experiences and spending time with new friends.”
The trip was well planned, and Britt was a kind, patient, and inspirational shepherd. -Jananne & Les McLaughlin (HSU friends)
The entire trip was awesome, and I think the best I’ve ever participated in. – Barbara Ringwald (HSU friend)
“It’s like we were family; everyone was having a good time and laughing together.”
“Exceeded my expectations,” recalls one recent HSU traveler. “As someone who has always been responsible for trip planning, it was a relief to have someone else lead the charge.”
“We had the time of our lives getting to explore the beauty and history of the Greek Islands and Turkey with like-minded travelers. One of the highlights of the trip was running into a young HSU alumni couple celebrating their honeymoon in Santorini! The purple and gold shouts loudly all around the world! We had such a great time that …we signed up to travel again with HSU to Ireland in June!” Leigh Weathersbee Evans ’76 & Richard Evans ’76
“I wanted to see the Passion Play in Europe that is produced every 10 years, and I wanted to cruise the Danube. When HSU offered a trip to Oberammergau, the trip seemed perfect! I felt I could trust that the arrangements would be reasonable and more importantly I would be safe, and the people I would travel with would be amicable. My hopes were spot-on. I had a fabulous time filled with the wonder of centuries-old architecture, snow covered mountains, museums with ancient artifacts, horrific remnants of WW2, the company of those who still wanted to learn, and scrumptious European cuisine. I am proud to be a part of the Traveling Range Riders and look forward to again experiencing other parts of the world with those associated with HSU, my alma mater.” Mahalo, Debbie Tom Keith ’72
“What a wonderful adventure I had exploring the Galápagos Islands with the HSU Traveling Range Riders in March, 2022! I would not trade one moment of our exciting day trips visiting unique, beautiful islands with jaw-dropping scenery, and getting ‘up-close & personal’ with amazing animals from giant Tortugas to blue-footed boobies! Every detail was taken care of by our wonderful crew; the meticulous pre-planning resulted in an effortless travel experience. I will definitely travel again with this wonderful program!” – Gail Beam Carpenter ’71

Leave the planning to us and fully enjoy the journey. The Traveling Range Riders program is dedicated to giving travelers enriching cultural experiences to enhance lifelong education while strengthening their connection with each other and Hardin-Simmons University.
With HSU, you’ll have the opportunity to explore regions in every corner of the world. Our itineraries offer an exciting blend of exotic destinations and traditional locales and are led by experienced guides and, whenever possible, an HSU host. We work with the most respected travel vendors in the industry to bring you high-quality opportunities to broaden your travel and intellectual horizons.
While the HSU connection is an important component of our program, our trips are open to all travel enthusiasts – alumni, family members, and friends alike – who want to take part in educational travel opportunities, ensuring a richer, more diverse experience for all!
The opportunity to travel with the Traveling Range Riders and the HSU Alumni Association is open to all HSU alumni and friends.
A minimum number of participants is required to secure the services of an HSU host. We make every effort to send a host from HSU on as many departures as possible as we know this greatly enhances the travelers’ experience and makes the trip unique. If this is important to you in making your decision to travel with our program, please call us to confirm our faculty/staff hosted tours and for more information.
Brochures or other available information may be requested from the HSU Traveling Range Riders office (travel@tjktp.net, 325-670-1377). You can also request information through our form: Traveling Range Riders Information Request (wufoo.com)
Brochures for each trip will be mailed by the tour operator approximately 6-9 months prior to departure. However, each tour operator makes their own decision about how many brochures to mail, so not everyone in our travel pool receives every brochure. In most cases, there is no need to wait for a brochure to reserve space on a tour. Many tours fill quickly, and we encourage you to call the tour operator to help you make your decision.
For upcoming trip information, call or email Program Director Britt Jones ’84 (brittj@tjktp.net 325-670-1377), click here to request a brochure about any (or all) upcoming trip, or click here to be added to our mailing list.
Most of our travel partners offer special discounts throughout the year. In many cases, these special discounts are an Early Booking Discount price. Book early to get the best price and to take advantage of special amenities (see each trip brochure for more details).
To register for the various travel opportunities listed on our website, you can either contact the respective tour operator for that program. or contact Program Director Britt Jones ’84 (brittj@tjktp.net 325-670-1377). Contact information for the tour operators will be outlined in individual trip brochures.
All trip pricing is per person based on double occupancy, or two people sharing a room or cabin, unless specified by the “no single supplement” text and icon. Many of the trips offered will require a single supplement for those who wish to travel alone. On most tours, a limited number of single rooms are available.
To lock in low airfares, our tour operators have negotiated special rates with major airlines that may require you to take non-direct flights. Please feel free to discuss “land only” options with the tour operator should you desire a more direct flight or want to use frequent flyer miles. HSU’s Traveling Range Riders program has no control over air travel and sometimes challenging airport infrastructures. Important to remember: If you book your own flights, you are responsible for making connections with the main group.
While we are optimistic that all of our tours will receive high reservation numbers, there is no way to predict the response to a particular tour. Our group sizes could range from as small as 2 people to as large as 50. If it’s one of our HSU exclusive, faculty-led tours, the group size will be kept to a maximum size of 24. You can always call the HSU Traveling Range Riders office to check the status of a trip’s group size before or after you book a tour.
Tour participants are subject to cancellation penalties as outlined in the individual trip brochures. Cancellation penalties are structured to coincide with advance payments that our tour operators must make to their suppliers, and the penalties are strictly enforced due to these contractual commitments.
Because our tour operators have different cancellation policies, please make sure that you understand all cancellation penalties prior to making your trip deposit. Each tour operator has a unique cancellation and refund policy.
Please review each trip brochure carefully prior to reserving space on a tour.
We also strongly encourage purchasing trip cancellation insurance.
We strongly recommend that you purchase travel insurance to ensure coverage in case of illness, injury, medical evacuation, delay or unforeseen emergency. We also strongly encourage purchasing trip cancellation insurance.

Hardin-Simmons highly recommends each traveler consider travel insurance. Our tour operators have relationships with certain insurance providers, which they will share with travelers, and an internet search will reveal other possible providers.
Avoiding Jet Lag
There is no singular cure for jet lag. Before departure, get ample rest, as being well-rested when you depart will allow you to better ward off jet lag symptoms. During your flight(s), be certain to drink plenty of water to counteract the dehydrating effects of air travel.
The goal is to adjust to your new time zone as quickly as possible, so follow this simple rule of thumb: if you are arriving in the morning, sleep on the plane so you will have energy for the day; if you are arriving in the evening, stay awake during the flight so you can sleep soundly at your destination.

Americans will need a Travel Authorization to visit Europe starting in mid-2025.
The rules of travel to most European countries have changed. Starting in mid-2025, some 1.4 billion people from over 60 visa-exempt countries are required to have a travel authorization to enter 30 European countries for a short stay. ETIAS travel authorization is linked to a traveler’s passport. It is valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new ETIAS travel authorization. With a valid ETIAS travel authorization, you can enter the territory of these European countries as often as you want for short-term stays – normally for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. However, it does not guarantee entry. When you arrive, a border guard will ask to see your passport and other documents and verify that you meet the entry conditions.
